ZAGORJE

Hrvatsko zagorje, a green oasis in the northwestern part of Croatia, is also known as "the northern gate of Croatia” because all roads and railways toward the rest of the world pass through Zagorje.
Slopes of hills cultivated by hard-working farmers are covered in deciduous forests of oak, beech and hornbeam, and one can also see cultivated fields, meadows and fertile vineyards and orchards. Wine roads are a specialty of this area, offering tastes and smells created by nature and human hands to visitors, a product of a rich wine-making tradition of the highest quality. Almost every hill has a small wooden cabin where hosts offer fine homemade sips of wine.

Presence of men in this area reaches back to the Stone Age. History lovers therefore gladly visit Hušnjakovo – one of the most abundant finding sites of the Neanderthal culture in Europe.
Museums of Zagorje present the culture, traditional and artistic wealth of this area, authentic customs and scenes from lives of knights and villagers, stories and legends. The only Croatian open-air museum, „Staro selo“ Kumrovec, preserves antique houses and tells stories about the life of a Zagorje villager in the past, with well-preserved castles, curia buildings and summer villas of nobles as witnesses to times long past and the life of Zagorje’s nobility.
The tranquility and beauty of this area, picturesque hills and green plains as well as healing properties of thermal wells leave nobody feeling indifferent. One always gladly returns to this countryside of knights, merry songs and good drink.
