MONEY

The Croatian currency is called kuna.
1 kuna (HRK or often abbreviated as Kn) = 100 lipa.
Notes include 1000, 500, 200, 100, 50, 20 and 10 HRK.
Coins include 25, 5, 2 and 1 kuna, as well as 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 lipa.

The exchange rate is (roughly) 7,3 HRK for 1 Euro (at the time of writing). You can exchange money into HRK in any bank or currency exchange office. Some shops/restaurants may accept payment in Euro if you ran out of local currency, but don’t depend on it. Many shops and restaurants will accept Visa, Diners, Mastercard and other credit cards, but ask first just to be sure.
To get some insight into average restaurant prices, you will usually pay 10-20 HRK for a beer, anywhere from 50-200 HRK for a bottle of wine and between 30 and 200 HRK for a meal, depending on the restaurant. Check the pricelist before ordering and/or ask the waiter to be sure you have enough of our currency.
Customs limitations: Import and export of foreign currency is unlimited. One can bring into / out of Croatia a limited amount of 2000 HRK. For any amount over 2000 HRK one will need to ask for a special permit from the Croatian national bank (Narodna banka Hrvatske).

TAX REFUND FOR FOREIGN CITIZENS

For any purchase over 500 Kn one needs to ask for a tax refund template document – “Porezni ček” (Tax cheque) and confirm it with the customs officers on the border crossing as you leave Croatia. The value-added tax in Croatia (PDV) is 23%.
