Rivers Drava and Mura create a border around a picturesque area – Međimurje – a place of meeting between the Eastern Alps and the Panonian basin. Framed on all sides by water it reminds people of an island, explaining the origin of the oldest Latin name for this area: Insula intra Dravam et Muram (an island between Drava and Mura).
Due to wonders of nature and development, this rich landscape and preserved nature is also famous as "Hortus Croatiae" (Croatian flower orchard) and "Little Switzerland ".
Međimurje is divided into lower Međimurje, a part of the Panonian basin, and the upper Međimurje which encompasses the last slopes of the Alps. Cruising through northern Croatia you will find wooden mills, ferries and traditional houses in the fertile Međimurje plains. Other than its Štrigovsko wine, Međimurje is also famous for its home-made delicacies such as “tiblica meat”, gibanica, zlevanka, buckwheat gruel, baked turkey…
Covering a relatively small area of 729,5 km2 Međimurje has three cities. The largest city and the center of Međimurje county is Čakovec, with Prelog and Mursko Središće being the other two.
The climate can be described as temperate continental, characterized by relatively hot summers, cold winters, fast transition from warm to cold part of the year, and relatively high amounts of precipitation.
Adrenaline and speed freaks often visit the Prelog speedway-track as well as the motorcycle racetrack in Novi Marof, with biking, parachuting and paragliding just some of many kinds of active vacation that Međimurje offers to its visitors.
