Croatian routes

LIKA

Lika. A countryside sheltered from the sea by the largest Croatian mountain Velebit, it encompasses an area from Mala Kapela to the north all the way to Gračac in the south. Because of the very size of the area it is so diverse and different that it always gives visitors a reason to return and visit this incredible area again. This picturesque plateau is intersected by mountain ranges and roads that connect the continent to the coastal area, but to pass through without stopping is almost a crime.
Karst mountaintops, valleys colored by fields of  flowers, clean air – it is a picture postcard that everyone gladly takes home with them.

Within its mountain borders, fertile fields such as Ličko, Gacko and Krbavsko got their names from the underground rivers of Lika’s karst. History has left its trail here as well. Conquering armies used to march through this area, and Krbavsko polje is still remembered as the place where Croatia’s nobles fell in battle against the Turks.
Adventurers visit Grabovača cave park, while passionate anglers love the Gacka river, well known for its river trout. This beauty among Croatian karst rivers is home to old mills, and some of them are still operational today. Three wells of Gacka provide it with flowing life, while the clarity and purity of its water hides a few secrets as well; speleological sites and home to the protected olm proteus.
Two national parks are also in Lika – the world renowned Plitvice (16 lakes), noted in the Unesco world heritage sites, and Northern Velebit – with a plethora of protected biological species and a beautiful view of the Adriatic sea.
Some of larger towns in Lika include Otočac, Vratnik, Gospić, Ličko Lešče, Zavižan.
